Overview:
As a Senior Data Center Technician (DCT) at Microsoft, you will be at the forefront of maintaining the infrastructure that supports Microsoft’s vast portfolio of cloud services, including Azure, Bing, Office 365, Xbox, and OneDrive. The role requires expertise in standard processes and procedures related to preparing, installing, diagnosing, troubleshooting, replacing, and decommissioning data center equipment. You’ll work on Microsoft’s cutting-edge server and network infrastructure, while contributing to continuous improvement and efficiency in service quality.
The Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) division is responsible for driving Microsoft’s cloud services forward. As a Data Center Technician, you will contribute to the foundational technologies behind Microsoft’s global cloud infrastructure. Key Responsibilities:
As a Senior Data Center Technician, you will be responsible for the smooth operation and maintenance of critical infrastructure within Microsoft’s data centers. Your responsibilities will include:
Advanced Diagnostics and Troubleshooting: Apply your expertise in diagnosing and resolving technical issues with complex data center hardware and systems. You’ll be expected to quickly identify the root cause of problems to minimize downtime and ensure operational efficiency.
Hardware Decommissioning: Handle decommissioning of hardware for systems with complex interactions, such as entire rack upgrades. You will follow standard procedures while working on critical infrastructure to ensure accuracy and compliance with organizational standards.
Delegation and Guidance: Delegate tasks such as hardware installation, deployment, and replacement to junior technicians. You will provide expert guidance on tasks like preparing, staging, setting up, and performing startups and shutdowns of racks, hard drives, and switches.
Quality Assurance: Ensure that all tasks are executed according to Microsoft’s high standards. You will coordinate system downtimes and keep stakeholders informed of project status to minimize the risk of downstream rework or issues.
Technician Mentorship: Serve as a mentor and guide to junior technicians, offering on-the-job training and expert insights into challenging or complex tasks. You’ll provide feedback and escalate issues as necessary to ensure seamless operations.
Compliance and Security: Verify that all decommissioned systems comply with security protocols, particularly with regards to data-bearing devices which must be processed for destruction. Ensuring security compliance is critical to Microsoft’s cloud services.
Post-Execution Quality Checks: Ensure that technicians follow through on quality checks after task completion, verifying that all equipment is properly grounded, staged, labeled, and cabled in accordance with Network Design Tasks (NDTs) and safety protocols.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Maintain awareness of data center KPIs and engage in monthly performance discussions. You will utilize dashboards and reports to monitor and track performance metrics to ensure operational excellence.
Safety Training and Procedures: Conduct and participate in daily safety briefings, and guide technicians on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage, equipment handling, and safe practices for electrical hazards, lifting, and ladder use.
Accountability and Service Quality: Demonstrate pride in the quality and completeness of your work. You are expected to hold yourself and your team accountable for delivering excellent user experiences and maintaining high service standards.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent with a basic understanding of computer hardware and components.
- At least 2+ years of experience supporting IT equipment or related technology in a data center or IT environment.
Background Check Requirements:
- You will need to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire and every two years thereafter. This is a requirement for all roles that work within Microsoft’s cloud services to ensure compliance with security regulations.
Preferred Qualifications: While not mandatory, possessing any of the following qualifications would be highly advantageous:
- Associate degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
- At least 3+ years of experience supporting IT equipment or related technology.
- 2+ years of experience working in a mission-critical 24x7x365 data center environment.
- Relevant certifications, such as ASICS/Inventory Control, CompTIA (A+, Server+, Network+), Basic Structure Cabling (BSC), Data Center Foundation Certification (DCFC), or Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP).
- Vendor-specific network certifications.
